Most attorneys – including myself – do not charge up front for handling injury cases. Attorneys fees are paid only if the client recovers and it is generally some percentage of the settlement and recovery once the case is over. These types of fees are called “contingency fees” because they are contingent upon recovery to the client. This is why you commonly see the advertisement by attorneys – “No fees unless you recover.”
For most non-injury cases, most attorneys charge by the hour for the actual work they do. They may have different schedules of fees for court time, legal research/writing, driving to court, document preparation, etc. My own hourly fees for non-injury type cases tend to be reasonable and competitive compared to other attorneys.
I generally tell prospective clients to meet with me to discuss the type of case that they have to determine how my fees would be structured. I am open to many different possibilities of handling fees – but all my injury cases – both workers compensation and personal injury cases are completely contingent – NO FEE UNLESS YOU RECOVER!
